Which Silverado 1500 generation should you buy?
2014 to 2018: the value truck
The third generation is simple and tough. The 5.3L V8 is the common engine. Cylinder deactivation lifter problems and a shudder from some eight-speed automatics are the known weak spots.
2019 and newer: the modern Silverado
The fourth generation is bigger and lighter, with a 2.7L turbo four, V8s and later a 3.0L diesel. The 2022 refresh fixed the much-criticised interior. Some 6.2L V8 engines from 2021 to 2024 are part of a major recall.
Silverado 1500 pros and cons
What owners like
- Strong V8s and a capable 3.0L diesel
- Huge range of configurations
- Cheaper than a comparable F-150 or Ram in many years
What owners complain about
- Lifter problems on V8s with cylinder deactivation
- Interior quality on 2019 to 2021 trucks
- Fuel costs with the V8s
What should you check before buying a used Silverado 1500?
- V8 engines: listen at idle and on the drive for ticking or misfires, a sign of lifter trouble on engines with cylinder deactivation.
- 6.2L, 2021 to 2024: run the VIN for the engine recall and ask for proof the inspection or repair was done.
- Eight-speed automatic: feel for a shudder at light throttle around 60 to 80 km/h, a known torque converter complaint.
- All years: check the frame and box for rust, test 4WD, look for towing wear and read the full Carfax.

The Silverado is often the value pick among full-size trucks. A 2019 to 2021 gives you the modern truck at a fair price. Check the V8 and the recall history before you buy.
