Which Escape generation should you buy?
2013 to 2019: cheap for a reason
The third generation is cheap used, but several of its EcoBoost engines drew recalls and complaints about overheating and coolant loss. History is everything.
2020 and newer: the better Escape
The fourth generation is lower, roomier and much more efficient, with a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. It is the one to buy, with the recall check done.
Escape pros and cons
What owners like
- Cheap to buy used
- Efficient hybrid and plug-in hybrid on 2020 and newer
- Roomy rear seat that slides
What owners complain about
- Engine and recall history on older EcoBoost cars
- Reliability trails Toyota and Honda
- Faster depreciation
What should you check before buying a used Escape?
- 2013 to 2019 EcoBoost: check the coolant level, look for leaks, and run the VIN for open recalls. Overheating and coolant loss were common complaints.
- 2020 and newer: run the VIN for open recalls. Several were issued on these years, so confirm the work was done.
- All years: test AWD, the screen and phone connection, and read the full Carfax.
Those are the Escape-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.

Skip the older Escape unless the price is very low and the history is spotless. A 2020 to 2022, ideally the hybrid, with every recall done, is a reasonable buy for less than a RAV4.
