Which CR-V generation should you buy?
2013 to 2016: simple and solid
A 2.4L four-cylinder with a five-speed automatic until 2014, then direct injection and a CVT for 2015 and 2016. Good, durable, a bit plain.
2017 to 2022: the big seller
Huge rear seat and cargo space, with the 1.5L turbo. The 2020 refresh updated the styling and tech, and the hybrid arrived.
2023 and newer: the newest
Larger and more refined, with a stronger hybrid line-up. Costs close to new.
CR-V pros and cons
What owners like
- Huge rear seat and cargo area for its size
- Strong reliability record
- Comfortable and easy to live with
What owners complain about
- Prices stay high
- CVT drone under hard acceleration
- Some road noise
What should you check before buying a used CR-V?
- 2017 to 2019, 1.5T: pull the dipstick. Oil that's overfull or smells of fuel points to oil dilution, reported more often in cold climates. Ask for dealer service history.
- All years: make sure the A/C blows cold and test the infotainment and phone connection.
- All years: test AWD, read the full Carfax and run the VIN for open recalls.
Those are the CR-V-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.

The CR-V is the easiest family SUV to recommend. A 2020 to 2022 gives you the refreshed car and the option of a hybrid.
