What does a used Jeep Wrangler cost in Canada?

These ranges are built from current average asking prices on CarGurus.ca across Canada, year by year. They cover the bulk of the market: a very high-kilometre car will sit below the range, and a nearly new, dealer-certified one at the top or above it.

Which Wrangler generation should you buy?

2013 to 2018: the JK

The JK with the 3.6L V6 is the affordable way into a Wrangler. It's cruder on the highway, but it's very capable and easy to modify.

2018 and newer: the JL

The JL rides and handles noticeably better, has a better interior, and adds a 2.0L turbo and the 4xe plug-in hybrid. Wranglers hold their value, so prices stay high.

Wrangler pros and cons

What owners like

  • Unmatched off-road ability from the factory
  • Holds its value extremely well
  • Doors and roof come off

What owners complain about

  • Noisy and thirsty on the highway
  • Reliability below average
  • Steering can feel vague

What should you check before buying a used Wrangler?

  • Steering: drive it over bumps at highway speed and watch for violent front-end shaking. This is often called death wobble and is usually fixable, but worn steering parts cost money.
  • 3.6L V6: look for oil leaks around the oil filter housing at the top of the engine.
  • Underneath: check the frame, skid plates and axles for off-road damage and rust.
  • All years: check soft tops and seals for leaks, read the full Carfax, and run the VIN for open recalls.

Those are the Wrangler-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.

You buy a Wrangler with your heart, and that's fine. Get a JL from 2019 to 2021, check the steering and the underside carefully, and you'll lose very little when you sell it.
