Which Crosstrek generation should you buy?
2013 to 2017: cheap and capable
The first generation is a lifted Impreza with AWD and 220 mm of ground clearance, but the 2.0L is slow. A hybrid version was sold from 2014 to 2016.
2018 to 2023: the one to buy
The second generation is quieter and safer. From 2021 the Sport and Limited trims got the 2.5L, which fixes the biggest complaint: power.
2024 and newer: the latest
The third generation brings a better cabin and a big screen. It holds its value well, so used savings are small.
Crosstrek pros and cons
What owners like
- Standard AWD and real ground clearance in a small car
- Good fuel economy for an AWD vehicle
- Holds its value well
What owners complain about
- The 2.0L is slow, especially loaded up
- Small cargo area for an SUV
- Road noise at highway speed
What should you check before buying a used Crosstrek?
- All years, CVT: drive it from cold and at highway speed and walk away from shudder or whine.
- 2013 to 2015: check the oil level and ask about oil consumption.
- All years: look underneath for rust on cars from salted provinces, test the AWD, read the full Carfax and run the VIN for open recalls.
Those are the Crosstrek-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.

The Crosstrek is the small car that thinks it's an SUV, and for Canadian winters that is exactly right. Get a 2021 to 2023 with the 2.5L if your budget allows.

How much is a used Subaru Crosstrek in Canada?
In October 2026 a used Subaru Crosstrek in Canada typically lists from about $8,000 for a 2014 to 2017 model to about $40,500 for a 2024 to 2025. The best value right now is a 2021 to 2023 car.
Which used Crosstrek is the best value?
A 2021 to 2023 Sport or Limited with the 2.5L engine. It solves the lack of power that holds back the 2.0L cars.
Is the Crosstrek big enough for a family?
For a couple or a small family, yes. With car seats and a stroller, the cargo area gets tight, and a Forester is the better fit.
Can you find a Subaru Crosstrek for me if I live outside BC?
Yes. The Car Finding Service covers the search, shortlist, inspection, negotiation and paperwork, and the car can be delivered anywhere in Canada. If you already found one, Remote Vehicle Verification sends an inspector to see it in person before you pay.
