Which Outback generation should you buy?

2015 to 2019: the comfortable wagon

The fifth generation is roomy, rides softly and has full-time AWD and real ground clearance. Most have the 2.5L and a CVT; the 3.6R six-cylinder is smoother and rarer. The 2018 refresh brought a quieter cabin and an updated screen.

2020 and newer: the modern Outback

The sixth generation added a big portrait touchscreen, EyeSight standard and an optional 2.4L turbo in the XT trims, which fixes the old lack of power. The 2023 refresh changed the styling and tech.

Outback pros and cons

What owners like

  • Standard AWD and SUV ground clearance with wagon handling
  • Very roomy cabin and cargo area
  • Comfortable on long highway trips

What owners complain about

  • The 2.5L feels slow when loaded
  • Touchscreen on 2020 and newer can be laggy
  • Some owners reported batteries draining and cracked windshields

What should you check before buying a used Outback?

  • All years, CVT: drive it from cold and at highway speed and walk away from shudder, whine or hesitation.
  • 2020 and newer: test the touchscreen, rear camera and phone connection, and look closely at the windshield for chips or cracks.
  • Battery: ask whether the battery has been replaced and watch for warning lights. Battery drain was a common owner complaint on several years.
  • All years: check for rust underneath on cars from salted provinces, test the AWD, read the full Carfax and run the VIN for open recalls.

Those are the Outback-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.

The Outback is the car for people who want SUV capability without driving an SUV. A 2020 to 2022 is the best value, and the 2.4L turbo XT is worth finding if you tow or drive loaded.
