Which Camry generation should you buy?
2013 to 2017: reliable and comfortable
Soft ride, simple mechanicals, cheap to own.
2018 to 2024: the better Camry
Lower, sharper and much nicer to drive. The 2.5L with an eight-speed is efficient, the hybrid is excellent, and AWD became available from 2020.
2025 and newer: hybrid only
The newest Camry is hybrid only and costs close to new.
Camry pros and cons
What owners like
- Reference-level reliability
- Hybrid version is very efficient
- Roomy and comfortable
What owners complain about
- Low seating makes getting in harder
- Eight-speed can feel busy in town
- Infotainment is basic on older cars
What should you check before buying a used Camry?
- 2018 and newer: drive it in traffic. Some owners find the eight-speed shifts abrupt at low speed.
- Hybrids: ask for a hybrid battery health report.
- All years: read the full Carfax and run the VIN for open recalls.
Those are the Camry-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.
