Which Corolla generation should you buy?

2014 to 2019: dull but bulletproof

The eleventh generation uses a 1.8L engine and mostly a CVT. From 2017 Toyota Safety Sense came standard, which makes 2017 to 2019 the better buy in this generation.

2020 and newer: the better Corolla

The twelfth generation drives far better, has a nicer cabin and adds a hybrid. AWD arrived on the hybrid for 2023. This is the one to stretch for.

Corolla pros and cons

What owners like

  • Near the top of the class for long-term reliability
  • Very low running and insurance costs
  • Hybrid version uses very little fuel

What owners complain about

  • Slow, especially the 1.8L
  • Tight rear seat and small trunk opening
  • Front-wheel drive on most versions, so winter tires are essential

What should you check before buying a used Corolla?

  • CVT: drive from a cold start and at low speed. Any shudder or slipping is worth investigating.
  • Hybrids: ask for a hybrid battery health report and service records.
  • All years: test the screen and phone connection, read the full Carfax, and run the VIN for open recalls.

Those are the Corolla-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.
