Which Sienna generation should you buy?
2013 to 2020: the V6 minivan
The third generation has a smooth 3.5L V6 and was the only minivan with AWD for years. From 2018 Toyota Safety Sense became standard, which makes 2018 to 2020 the best of this generation.
2021 and newer: hybrid only
The fourth generation is hybrid only, with very good fuel economy and available AWD. Demand is high, so used prices sit close to new.
Sienna pros and cons
What owners like
- Very reliable, and holds its value
- AWD available, rare in a minivan
- The 2021 and newer hybrid uses little fuel for its size
What owners complain about
- Used prices are high
- Older cars feel dated inside
- The 2021 and newer second row is less flexible than some rivals
What should you check before buying a used Sienna?
- Power sliding doors: open and close both doors several times. Door motors and cables are a common repair on high-kilometre vans.
- Hybrid: ask for a hybrid battery health report and service records.
- All years: test the AWD if equipped, read the full Carfax and run the VIN for open recalls.
Those are the Sienna-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.

If you need a minivan that will run for a very long time, buy the Sienna. A 2018 to 2020 is the value pick; a 2021 or newer hybrid if the budget allows.
