Which Tacoma generation should you buy?
2013 to 2015: old but tough
The second generation is simple and very durable. Frame rust is the issue to check on every one.
2016 to 2023: the one most people buy
The third generation uses a 3.5L V6 and a six-speed automatic. It's reliable and holds its value like few vehicles in Canada.
2024 and newer: all new
The fourth generation uses a 2.4L turbo, with an available hybrid. Better cabin, but a new design with a short track record.
Tacoma pros and cons
What owners like
- Holds its value better than almost anything
- Strong reliability record
- Very capable off-road, especially TRD versions
What owners complain about
- Expensive used
- Low seating position and tight cabin
- Automatic hunts for gears on 2016 and newer
What should you check before buying a used Tacoma?
- 2nd generation: inspect the frame closely for rust and rot. This generation had well-known frame rust problems.
- 3rd generation: drive it on hills and in traffic. Some owners dislike how the six-speed hunts between gears, which is normal, but harsh shifts aren't.
- Underneath: check for off-road damage, leaks at the differentials and rust.
- All years: read the full Carfax and run the VIN for open recalls.
Those are the Tacoma-specific items. The general checks for any used car are in my pre-purchase inspection checklist, and before any money moves, run a lien check.

A Tacoma is close to the safest money you can put into a truck. A 2018 to 2021 is the best value. Check the frame and underside like you would on any truck that may have seen salt or trails.
